2024 Voter Toolkit 004: What Are My Voter Values?

Next, we tackle a big one: What are my Voter Values?

Voter Values are the core beliefs and opinions that drive your vote. Your Voter Values help you understand where you stand on big issues and help you think about how these issues affect yourself, your community, and your country.

We know this sounds like a lot but don’t worry. MVP has laid out steps you can take to get informed and solidify your opinions before you get to the polls. Defining your Voter Values will ultimately help you decide which candidates you align with and how you want to fill out your ballot. Check out our guide to Voter Values:

⭐ WHO AM I AS A VOTER?

First thing’s first. Last week, we explored who you are as a voter and what your current roadblocks are. That information is the basis to all your Voter Values. Check out last week’s resource if you haven’t already and ask yourself, Who Am I As A Voter?

⭐ ONLINE RESEARCH

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: online research is your biggest asset when figuring out exactly where you stand on issues. Simple Google searches about certain issues, candidates, or news events can help you understand the current political climate and solidify your opinions. Although this step feels overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Get specific with your Google searches by starting with topics you know a little bit about already or issues you’ve seen affecting your community.

Reading news sources, op eds, and informational peer reviewed resources can teach you so much and give you the information you need to create a Voter Value. Just remember to use reputable, unbiased resources!

⭐ EVENTS

We are so lucky that politics are alive and well in our town. There are many events around town leading up to the election that can help you learn more about the issues, the candidates, and the context surrounding the upcoming election. Here is a list of a few interesting upcoming events around town!

⭐ DISCUSSION

Discussion with friends and family may be one of the most fruitful ways to give and get information. Having lively yet safe conversations with loved ones may open your mind or theirs to new perspectives. Bring up questions you have, issues you’re passionate about, or current events in an open and safe environment. You never know how your perspective can shift!

⭐ HOT TOPICS

Below are some common concern areas for voters to get you started. Use these for your online research, topics to think about at events, and starting points for discussion. Follow the steps we laid out in this resource to help you figure out what your values, opinions, concerns are and then what you want to see change in your community and country.
